Stump Grinding in Fortuna

Fortuna trees live with eel River Valley wind, winter-softened soils, and mature yard trees in the older neighborhoods. Around here that mostly means Douglas fir, coast redwood, cottonwood, walnut, and when one of them needs attention, you want a crew that has worked on that exact kind of tree in that exact weather.

In a dry climate, an old stump is an eyesore. On the wet North Coast, it is an active problem. Our rainfall turns dead stumps into sponges, and sponges into habitat.

The grinder is a purpose-built machine with a spinning carbide wheel that sweeps across the stump, shaving it into chips from the top down. We grind below grade, chase the major surface roots where needed, and either leave the chip mound to settle, spread it as mulch, or haul it and backfill so the spot is seed-ready.
